    Exquisite sound for the money

I've owned Sennheiser headphones since 1981 when I bought a pair of HD 40 on a trip to NYC and they are still an amazing set of cans. I've since purchased a wide variety of headphones from Sennheiser as well as other manufaturers over the last 30+ years so I have a vast degree of experience with headphones from the likes of AKG, Koss, Sony, Beyerdynamic, Stax, Audio-Technica, JBL, Shure, and Grado. They range in price from well over $500 to as little as $10 and vary in style from lightweight on ear to closed studio monitors to circumaurals to electrostats. In total I have over thirty different models and many of them from Sennheiser. I purchased the Sennheiser PX 90 on sale from a local retailer on a whim because I had just purchased a pair of Koss PortaPros and felt something was missing and wanted to see how the Senns would compare. The PortaPros have a very open sound and provide the listener with a great deal of texture and soundstage but I find the upper midgrange and top end somewhat veiled and it is particluraly noticeable on female vocals that seem somewhat recessed while cymbals lack that sparkle. In addition, the rolled off top end of the PortaPros doesn't give the listener a sense of air in a concert hall. Enter the PX 90 and all is right with the world. They have that shimmer and midrange presence lacking in the Koss plus even better bass extension. That is a double edged sword at times though because the bass can be a bit boomy and somewhat ill defined particularly on an upright bass line in jazz but the bottom end extension gives excellent weight to the classical repertoire. For the price I paid, about $30 on sale, they are a steal for a headphone that feels like its not even there and yet provides such an open, detailed yet warm presentation. My only other quible is that while they do have a portable friendly impedance rating, their output level is less efficient than the PortaPros or even the PX 100. It's a trade off I'm willing to make for such exquisite sound for such a small expenditure. Well worth the price even at full retail. They are not perfect but when compared to other similar designs in a similar category and at a similar price point, the PX 90s punch WELL above their weight. I'd buy another pair if they were still available.

    Great Headphones

I used these headphones for about 2 years and for these 2 years they were probably the best set of headphones I've ever had. They are the worth every penny that I spent buying these headphones and its just a shame that while in a pocket in my bag the plastic connecter between the headband and the earpiece snapped. This is probably due to heavy daily use and more knocks and bashes then I would care to admit. Well worth buying!
